Electrical

WARNING

Electric shock hazard can cause serious injury or death. Verify the line voltage matches the specification label and connect only to a GFCI-protected circuit. Do not connect to a switched outlet. Unplug before servicing.

The line voltage must match the voltage on the specification label. The plug on the power cord must match the appropriate outlet. Do NOT connect the system to a switched electrical outlet.

Plumbing

Only connect the system to the cold water line. Do NOT connect it to the hot water line.

When making plumbing connections, use a back-up wrench on the supporting plumbing. Use pipe sealant or thread seal tape on pipe threads, but never allow pipe sealant inside the pipes.

For the 1 inch plastic NPT connections, wrap the male threads with PTFE thread seal tape and turn the fitting hand-tight plus 1 to 2 turns. Do not over-torque the plastic. If you use soldered plumbing with your system, do NOT apply heat to the filtration system.

Mounting the System

Use the following recommendations when mounting your system.

  • Allow sufficient access for UltraFilter membrane replacement.
  • Mount the system near an electrical outlet, but NOT directly above it.
  • Mount the system so it has access to a drain for flushing.
  • Mount the system before any filtration processes for consumable water (e.g., water softener).
  • Optional bracket and hardware are available for installations requiring additional support.

To mount the system directly onto the wall:

  1. Attach the system securely to the wall. Use a stud finder and level as necessary.
  2. Secure the bottom portion of the system to the wall using the provided holes, either into wall studs or with the appropriate hardware.

To mount the system with the optional brackets:

CAUTION

Falling-equipment hazard. An improperly anchored system can fall from the wall and cause injury or damage. Use at least two 1/4 inch lag bolts on the Z Mounting Bracket with at least one bolt driven into a wall stud. The figure shows three bolts with the center bolt going into the stud.

  1. Use a stud finder to locate the stud behind the wall.
  2. Once the stud is located, mark the height of the Z Mounting Bracket. For models UF-4210 and UF-4220, measure at least 40 inches (1016 mm) from the floor at the stud location. For models UF-4410 and UF-4420, measure at least 60 inches (1524 mm) from the floor at the stud location.
  3. Attach the Z Mounting Bracket securely to the stud behind the wall using 1/4 inch lag bolts and 1/4 inch washers. Use at least two lag bolts, with at least one driven into a wall stud, as shown in Figure 1.
  4. Lift the system and seat it in the middle of the Z Mounting Bracket so it fits securely in place.
  5. At the bottom of the upper and lower System Mounting Bracket, there are 2 holes. In each, use a 1/4 inch lag bolt and 1/4 inch washer to secure the system to the wall.

Drain Valve Connection

The drain valve (electric ball valve) is used to flush accumulated debris from the system during self-cleaning.

To properly install the drain valve connection:

  1. Cut tubing (not supplied) so that it can reach the drain from the drain valve. Use a minimum 1/2 inch line.
  2. Use an appropriate 3/4″ NPT fitting (not supplied) to connect an end of the tubing to the drain valve.
  3. Direct the other end of the tubing to the drain.

When making the drain valve connection, follow these guidelines:

  • Use an open, unrestricted drain pipe sized for high flow, 1/2 inch or larger.
  • The drain line must slope continuously downward to the drain with no upslope. Keep it as short as possible to avoid kinks, head pressure, or loops.
  • Secure the tubing so that there is a proper air break, at least 2 inches (51 mm) above the drain, to protect from contamination in case the drain ever backs up.
  • Ensure the drain is not blocked or restricted in any way.
  • Ensure the drain is as large as, or larger than, the tubing used for the drain valve connection.
Figure 2. Drain valve
Figure 2. Drain Valve

UltraFilter Rinse Valve Connection

Connect the UltraFilter rinse valve to a proper air-gap drain.

System Inlet Connection

Do not overtighten the fittings, which could cause damage to the fittings. Hand-tight plus 1 to 2 turns is sufficient on the plastic NPT connections; do not over-torque.

When making connections to the system, use plastic fittings and a pipe thread sealant that is approved for use on PVC fittings.

System Outlet Connection

Do not overtighten the fittings, which could cause damage to the fittings. Hand-tight plus 1 to 2 turns is sufficient on the plastic NPT connections; do not over-torque.

When making connections to the system, use plastic fittings and a pipe thread sealant that is approved for use on PVC fittings.

Inlet Water Plumbing

WARNING

High-pressure hazard. Do not exceed 125 psig (862 kPa) inlet pressure. Install a pressure regulator if supply pressure can exceed this. Protect against water hammer.

Install a tee fitting with plug before the system inlet, which can then be used to sanitize the system and any downstream plumbing.

Minimum inlet pressure is 20 psi. Aquamor recommends installing a booster pump on any inlet pressure below 50 psi, to bring supply pressure to a minimum of 50 psi for more consistent flow and flushing of the UF membranes.

Flush all supply plumbing thoroughly before connecting the system. Slowly open the inlet water valve while holding a bucket at the inlet line. Continue until all debris is removed from the pipe.

Figure 3. System connections
Figure 3. System Connections

Bypass Installation

Installing an optional bypass on the system is recommended, as it will help with UltraFilter membrane replacement and servicing. To install a bypass:

  1. Install a tee on the inlet and outlet ball valves.
  2. Install plumbing and a fully ported ball valve to connect the tees on the inlet and outlet ball valves.
  3. When the system is in use, close the bypass ball valve while opening the inlet and outlet ball valves.
  4. When the system needs to be serviced, open the bypass valve while closing the inlet and outlet ball valves.

Starting the Controller

  1. Plug the power supply harness into the left-most port of the controller (locking tab facing up).
  2. Plug the power supply into a power outlet. The display will power on and show the time-of-day screen.
  3. Do not initiate a manual flush yet. Turn on the water supply and complete Rinsing the UltraFilter, below, first. Once water supply is on, a manual flush is initiated by pressing and holding the LEFT and RIGHT arrow buttons together for 5 seconds; the display switches to the programming screen and counts down the flush, then automatically returns to the time-of-day display.

Rinsing the UltraFilter

The UltraFilter membrane ships inside the stainless steel vessel. It stays in its sealed sanitary plastic bag.

Before you use the system, remove the sanitary bag. Then install the membrane adapters.

Once the UltraFilter is installed, rinse it before you use the system. Rinsing removes trapped air and the protective storage solution.

  1. Thread the garden hose adapter (P/N 304629) onto the rinse ball valve and run a hose to the drain.
  2. Direct the UltraFilter rinse valve connection to a drain.
  3. Close the outlet and inlet valves.
  4. Open the UltraFilter rinse valve.
  5. Slowly turn on the water supply to the system.
  6. Slowly open the inlet valve. Air and water will then come out of the UltraFilter rinse valve.
  7. Initiate a manual flush (press and hold the LEFT and RIGHT arrows together for 5 seconds) to open the flush ball valve. Air and water will come out of the drain line.
  8. Repeat the manual flush six more times. Let each flush finish before starting the next. This clears all air and storage solution from the UltraFilter.
  9. Allow water to run at full flow out of the UltraFilter rinse valve for at least 15 minutes.
  10. Close the UltraFilter rinse valve.
  11. Let the system sit with no water flow for 15 minutes. This releases any trapped air from the permeate tank.
  12. Inspect the unit and all connections for leaks and repair as needed.
  13. After 15 minutes, open the UltraFilter rinse valve and allow the system to flush out any remaining air for 5 minutes.
  14. Close the UltraFilter rinse valve.
  15. Disconnect the hose.
  16. Initiate the manual flush six times (LEFT and RIGHT arrows held together for 5 seconds each, allowing each to complete) to flush any remaining air from the system.
  17. Open the closest downstream tap or faucet.
  18. Open the outlet valve slowly, then let water flow through the system and out the faucet for 5 minutes.

Sanitizing the System and Lines

(If a sanitation tee is installed in front of the inlet connection.)

Sanitize the plumbing after installation. This removes any contamination from the install.

You will need a sanitizer. Use one ounce (30 ml) of liquid chlorine bleach. You can also use a Kay-5 sanitizer solution or an equivalent.

To make the Kay-5 solution, dissolve a 1 oz. packet of Kay-5 powder in 2 oz. (60 ml) of clean warm water.

Sanitizer reference: Use unscented regular bleach (5.25% to 6% sodium hypochlorite). Kay-5 powder is sodium dichloro-s-triazinetrione dihydrate (6%); mixed as directed and added to the system, it creates a 60 to 100 ppm chlorine solution.
WARNING

Chemical hazard. Chlorine sanitizer can cause skin and eye burns and harmful fumes. Wear eye and skin protection, work in a ventilated area, do not mix with other chemicals, and follow the safety instructions supplied with the sanitizer.

  1. Rinse the UltraFilter according to the steps in this manual.
  2. Turn off the water to the system.
  3. Open the faucet or tap closest downstream to the system so that the system and plumbing can drain.
  4. Remove the plug installed on the tee fitting at the inlet of the system and allow any remaining water to drain out of the system.
  5. Using a cup or funnel, carefully pour the sanitizer into the tee fitting.
  6. Reattach the plug onto the tee fitting.
  7. Slowly turn on the water supply to the system.
  8. Let the water flow through the system and out of the nearest faucet or tap.
  9. Once the smell of sanitizer is noticeable, close the faucet or tap.
  10. Allow the system to stand without water flow for at least 15 minutes to sanitize the pipes.
  11. After 15 minutes, open the faucet or tap.
  12. Allow water to flow until the presence of sanitizer is gone.
  13. Flush the remaining sanitizer from the plumbing by opening all other faucets and taps in line with the system.
  14. Then close all faucets and taps.

OPERATION

Overview

The system features two modes: Normal Operation Mode and Flush Mode.

In Normal Operation Mode, water enters the inlet and flows into the filter, then out the permeate outlet as usable water.

In Flush Mode, water enters the inlet and cleans the UltraFilter by removing any debris from the membrane wall.

NOTICE

Equipment damage. Interrupting power or water during Flush Mode stops the flush cycle while filtration continues, which can plug the UltraFilter. Do not unplug the power cord or shut off the water while the system is in Flush Mode.

Manual Flushing

During installation, or whenever a manual flush is desired independent of the programmed flush time(s), press and hold the LEFT and RIGHT arrow buttons simultaneously for 5 seconds. The display switches from the time-of-day display to the programming screen and counts down the flush; once the flush completes, the system automatically returns to the time-of-day display.

Note: Manually flushing does not affect the programmed flush schedule.

MAINTENANCE

Replacing the UltraFilter

  1. Close the incoming water valve and outlet valve.
  2. Flush the system to empty the permeate tank by initiating a manual flush (press and hold the LEFT and RIGHT arrow buttons together for 5 seconds); repeat until the tank is empty.
  3. Unplug the power adapter from the controller.
  4. Open the UltraFilter rinse valve and confirm no water flows, to relieve any remaining system pressure.
  5. Remove the (2) rear yellow, blue, or green manifold clips. Then pull the entire system portion from the two manifold blocks (still mounted to wall or bracket).
CAUTION

Stored-pressure hazard. The membrane housing can retain trapped pressure even after the system is depressurized. Confirm the rinse valve shows no flow before loosening the endcap clamps.

  1. Loosen both endcap metal clamps and remove the end caps.
  2. Remove the UltraFilter membrane.
  3. Inspect the O-rings for nicks or cuts. Replace as needed.
  4. Apply a food-grade silicone lubricant to all O-rings. Then lubricate the inside center tube at both ends of the new UltraFilter membrane.
  5. Locate and record the serial number of the new UltraFilter membrane, which is located on one end of the outer tube.
  6. Install the end cap O-ring on the end cap and insert the large end cap into the end of the new UltraFilter membrane.
  7. Carefully install the new UltraFilter membrane into the housing (AQ UF-20, Part No. 305513 for 20-inch systems; AQ UF-40, Part No. 305511 for 40-inch systems; see the Performance Data Sheet and Replacement Parts).
  8. Reinstall the endcap with end clamps (keep slightly loose).
  9. Reinstall the UltraFilter sub-assembly into the manifold blocks already mounted. Once connector tubes are seated, reinstall the rear manifold clips. Then tighten the endcap clamps both top and bottom.
  10. Rinse the new UltraFilter before placing the system back into operation. Refer to the Rinsing the UltraFilter and Sanitizing the System and Lines procedures in this manual.
  11. After rinsing, open the outlet valve and inlet valve to repressurize the system.

Controller

The controller directs the start time, interval, and duration of each membrane flush. It normally displays the time of day; during a flush it switches to the programming screen and counts down the flush duration.

The flush settings can be changed, though it is recommended to leave them at the default setting. The controller uses a 24-hour clock.

To change the settings on the UF controller:

  1. Press the Right arrow button once to enter the programming menu. The screen shows Start Time, Flush Duration, Flush Interval, and RTC Time.
  2. Start Time sets when the first flush of the day occurs. Press the Right arrow to align the cursor under the digit you want to change, then use the Up and Down arrows to change it.
  3. Press the Right arrow to move to Flush Duration, how long the flush ball valve is energized during each flush sequence. Duration is programmable in 5-second increments between 5 and 60 seconds. Default: 15 seconds.
  4. Press the Right arrow to move to Flush Interval, how many times the UF membrane flushes within a 24-hour period. Default: once every hour.
  5. Press the Right arrow to move to RTC Time (the real-time clock). Set each of the four time digits with the Up and Down arrows; press the Right arrow to advance to the next digit.
  6. The controller stores your settings automatically. Settings are retained through a power cycle.

Note: The installer may change the flush interval based on known local water conditions. Where conditions allow, the interval may be reduced to as few as four flushes per day for commercial applications, or as few as one flush per day (every 24 hours) for residential applications. Reducing the flush cycle beyond what the local water conditions will support can lead to premature plugging or failure of the UltraFilter.

Check Permeate Tank Pre-Charge

The air charge on the system's permeate tank should be checked every 6 months. In order to check the charge, you will need the following items:

CAUTION

Stored-pressure hazard. The permeate tank holds pressurized water and air. Releasing it without depressurizing can spray water or eject the air valve. Close the inlet and outlet valves and open the UltraFilter rinse valve to fully depressurize the system and drain the tank before removing the air valve cap or adjusting tank pressure.

  1. Close the inlet and outlet valves, then open the UltraFilter rinse valve to depressurize the system. Allow the permeate tank to fully drain.
  2. Remove the cap from the air valve on the permeate tank.
Note: If water comes out of the air valve, the tank needs to be replaced, as the internal bladder has ruptured.
  1. Check the tank pre-charge for pressure using a pressure gauge. It should have a pressure of 40 psi (2.8 bar) when empty.
    • If you need to add pressure to the tank, use an air compressor or manual air pump. Be careful not to add too much pressure to the tank.
    • If you need to remove pressure from the tank, press the center pin on the air inlet valve.
  2. Once the permeate tank is at 40 psi (2.8 bar), replace the protective cap on the air valve.
  3. Close the UltraFilter rinse valve and open the inlet and outlet valves to repressurize the system.

Recommended Preventative Maintenance Schedule

Intervals are typical starting points. Adjust to local water conditions and usage.

Maintenance ItemRecommended Interval
Inspect plumbing connections for leaksMonthly
Verify drain tubing is secure and unobstructedMonthly
Verify the automatic flush cycle is operating properlyMonthly
Inspect the controller and power connectionsMonthly
Check permeate tank pre-charge pressureEvery 6 months
Inspect UltraFilter membrane performance (flow and pressure drop)Every 6 months or as needed
Replace UltraFilter membrane (AQ UF-20, Part No. 305513 for 20-inch systems; AQ UF-40, Part No. 305511 for 40-inch systems; see Replacement Parts)When differential pressure (DP) is 25 psid or greater. See the note below.
Reading differential pressure (DP): The two pressure gauges (P/N 500007) installed at the inlet and outlet gauge ports read system inlet and outlet pressure. DP is the difference between these two readings. When DP reaches 25 psid or greater: first confirm the permeate tank's flushing function is working and the tank has the correct air pre-charge (40 psi with the tank empty; see Check Permeate Tank Pre-Charge, above); then run 3 to 5 manual flush cycles (press and hold the LEFT and RIGHT arrows together for 5 seconds, letting each finish before the next); then check DP again. If DP is still 25 psid or greater, contact Aquamor.
DISPOSAL AND STORAGE

End-of-Life and Disposal

When the system reaches the end of its service life, decommission and dispose of it responsibly.

  1. Disconnect the system from the water supply and from electrical power. Unplug the power cord.
  2. Depressurize the system: close the inlet and outlet valves, open the UltraFilter rinse valve to relieve pressure, and allow the permeate (storage) tank to fully drain before removing or transporting any component.
  3. Remove the UltraFilter membrane. The spent membrane is not recyclable through standard household recycling. Dispose of it as ordinary solid waste unless your local regulations direct otherwise.
  4. The system controller, power adapter, and any electronic components should be handled as electronic waste. Recycle them through a qualified electronics-recycling program where one is available.
  5. Drain and dispose of the permeate storage tank only after the air pre-charge has been released through the air valve.
  6. Follow all local, state, and federal regulations for the disposal of plumbing components, plastics, and electronic waste.

Storage and Winterization

NOTICE

Equipment damage. The UltraFilter membrane will be permanently damaged if it freezes. The membrane cannot be drained to winterize; it must stay wet at all times. Protect it from freezing as described below.

If the system will be stored, shut down, or left in an unheated space, prepare it as follows.

  1. Turn off and unplug the power.
  2. Close the inlet valve to shut off the water supply.
  3. Open the UltraFilter rinse valve and the nearest downstream faucet or tap to relieve pressure and drain water from the system and the permeate tank.
  4. Allow the system to drain as completely as possible.
  5. Protect the membrane from freezing. The system cannot be fully drained to winterize, and the membrane must remain wet. Keep the system in a space maintained above 32 degrees F (0 degrees C) at all times. If the storage location can fall to or below freezing, relocate the system to a heated area before freezing conditions arrive. Do not rely on draining to protect the membrane.
  6. Store the system in a clean, dry, above-freezing location out of direct sunlight, between 40 degrees F (4.4 degrees C) and 100 degrees F (38 degrees C).
  7. Before returning the system to service after storage, rinse the UltraFilter and sanitize the system and lines according to the procedures in this manual.
TROUBLESHOOTING

Use the table below to diagnose common conditions. If a condition is not listed, persists after the listed action, or involves a leak you cannot stop, depressurize the system and contact Aquamor before continuing.

SymptomLikely CauseActionStop and Call Aquamor If
Leak at a fitting or connection Connection not seated, sealant or thread tape missing, or fitting over-torqued and cracked. Depressurize the system (close inlet and outlet valves, open the rinse valve). Inspect the connection and reseat it with thread seal tape, hand-tight plus 1 to 2 turns. Do not over-torque the plastic. The leak continues after reseating, a plastic part is cracked, or water reaches electrical components.
Leak from the body of a membrane housing or end cap O-ring damaged or misseated, or end-cap clamp loose. Depressurize the system. Inspect the O-rings for nicks; replace and lubricate with food-grade silicone as described under Maintenance, and re-seat the end caps and clamps. The leak continues after service or the housing itself appears damaged.
Low or no flow at the outlet Inlet valve partly closed, supply pressure low, system in Flush Mode, or membrane fouled. Confirm the inlet valve is fully open and supply pressure is at least 20 psi (1.4 bar); a booster pump is recommended below 50 psi for consistent flow and flushing. Wait for any flush cycle to finish. If flow stays low, the membrane may need replacement. Flow does not recover after these checks, or supply pressure cannot be brought into range.
Controller screen is blank or has no power Power adapter unplugged, connected to a switched outlet, or harness not seated in the controller. Confirm the adapter is plugged into a live, unswitched outlet and the power harness is fully seated in the left-most controller port. Verify the outlet with another device. The screen stays blank with confirmed power, or the cord or adapter is damaged.
System will not flush Power interrupted during a flush, flush settings changed, or drain line blocked. Restore power. Initiate a manual flush (hold the LEFT and RIGHT arrows together for 5 seconds). Confirm the drain line is clear and not kinked, and review the flush settings under Maintenance. The system still will not flush after power is restored and the drain is confirmed clear.
Cloudy water or off taste after startup or service Trapped air, or storage solution not fully rinsed from a new membrane. Complete the Rinsing the UltraFilter procedure in full, including the repeated manual flushes, then run water at the nearest tap until it clears. Cloudiness or off taste remains after a complete rinse, or the source water quality is in question.
Water at the permeate tank air valve The internal tank bladder has ruptured. Depressurize the system. The permeate tank must be replaced; it cannot be repaired. Water is present at the air valve. Replace the tank.
